The Eagle Huntress - UK (Otto Bell).  Mongolian girl trains an eagle for hunting.

The Handmaiden - S. Korea (Chan-Wook Park). Exotic, entertaining tale with intrigue and humor.

Hell or High Water - (David Mackenzie).  A contemporary western with surprising twists.

Hidden Figures - (Theodore Melfie).  Drama about 4 female mathematicians at NASA in the 1950’s.

Hunt for the Wilderpeople - Australia (Taika Waititi).  Unlikely bonding of a runaway boy with a grumpy old man.

I am not your Negro - (Raoul Peck).  A radical view of race in America as seen by James Baldwin.

Jackie - (Pablo Larrain).  Dramatization of Jacqueline Kennedy after the assassination.

Kubo and the Two Strings - (Travis Knight).  Animated magical story of a Japanese boy.

La La Land - (Damien Chazelle).  A musical about two people in show business trying to make it together.

Loving - (Jeff Nichols).  Account of a multiracial couple’s efforts to be married in Virginia.

Manchester by the Sea - (Kenneth Lonergan).  Guardianship of a nephew is at issue.

Moana - (Ron Clements et al.).  Animation about a princess who must go on a heroine’s journey to save her people.

Moonlight - (Barry Jenkins).  Story of a boy growing up in a drug-infested neighborhood.

Nocturnal Animals - (Tom Ford).  Artistic rendering of parallel stories, one a thriller.

Paterson - (Jim Jarmusch).  A gentle, poetic, and warmly humorous look at a slice of humanity.

Queen of Katwe - (Mira Nair).  A chess-playing Ugandan girl tries to escape poverty.
